| The Women’s Reservation Bill passed in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, as a broad consensus emerged among all major parties. After a day-long debate in the lower house, the government was able to secure a comfortable two-thirds majority needed to pass the bill. With 454 MPs voting in favour, while two MPs opposed its passage. Now Rajya Sabha has set aside over seven hours to discuss the same on Thursday. The proceedings of the house began with Union Law Minister Arjun Meghwal moving the bill for passage. Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi set the tone for the day-long debate by extending support on behalf of the main opposition party. Prime minister Narendra Modi was in the House when the voting took place. The Bill seeks to reserve one-third of all seats for women in the Lok Sabha and the State legislative assemblies. The seats already reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) will also come within the purview of the women’s reservation. | The ministry of external affairs on Thursday said Canada’s allegations against India are politically driven. The statement came from MEA spokesperson Arindam Baghchi during the weekly media briefing. At a time India and Canada’s diplomatic ties are going through the roughest patch. Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged Indian involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, wanted in India for years. The public allegations strained the India-Canada relationship with both countries expelling their diplomats. On Thursday, India’s visa processing centre in Canada suspended services. Bagchi confirmed that Canada shared no specific information regarding the allegations. The allegations were raised by Trudeau with PM Modi when Trudeau was in India to attend the G20 summit. | Pakistan’s election commission announced that the general elections in the country will take place in the last week of January 2024. In a statement, the electoral body said that it reviewed work on delimiting constituencies. The initial list for the delimitation of constituencies would be published on September 27. The final list would be issued on November 30 after hearing objections and suggestions regarding the list. General elections are scheduled to be held in Pakistan within 90 days after the dissolution of the National Assembly, which was prematurely dissolved on August 9. The previous government announced just days before the end of its term that the elections could take place only after a new census Also new constituency boundaries would be drawn. The move triggered fears that the polls meant to be held within 90 days may be delayed till next year. As the delimitation process would take about four months to complete.
